As Long As It Is Day

09/14/2021

We have kept this blog posted as we believe this simple message is applicable to all believers.

Sojourners upcoming trip to Iraq takes on heightened importance in view of what happened in Afghanistan.

In July President Biden and Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi announced the withdrawal of all US combat troops by the end of 2021.  Less than a month later, the world witnessed the collapse of the Afghani government and unprecedented chaos as US Troops left Afghanistan.

How long will northern Iraq and Eastern Syria remain in relative stability?  No one knows for sure.  However, as recorded in the Gospels, Jesus shared special words that yield providential insights instructions for our trip:

We must work the Works of him who sent me as long as it is day. Night is coming when no man can work. (John 9:4)

For three years since the retreat and eventual defeat of ISIS, northern Iraq has been blessed with relative peace. It has afforded tremendous freedom to reach out to those hurting physically, emotionally, and spiritually from the recent onslaughts. There is a "period of day", where we can move freely and work the works of our Heavenly Father. But how long will this last?

In November 2019, a half year after the complete defeat of ISIS, the US made a decision to withdraw its troops from Syria. Immediately, Turkey crossed into northern Syria and the region entered into panic with waves of Syrians again fleeing out of their country. The only thing that prevented a complete breakdown was a reversal of the withdrawal and decision to keep troops stationed around the oil fields in Eastern Syria, where they currently still remain.

If this event in the recent past is any indicator of what lies ahead, then considerable chaos could descend once again onto Syria and also Iraq with the removal of all combat troops.

Into this, Sojourners United has an incredible opportunity starting on 22 September to reach out and share God's Love and to Serve the People of northern Iraq and Syria. There is still daylight, and we are dedicated to make the most of these times.

We also desire to prepare the people and ourselves for the strong possibility of periods of instability, chaos and perhaps even persecution as the political climate undergoes changes at the end of 2021 into 2022.

Please unite with us in prayer. Please unite with us in reaching out to people now and being prepared to reach out over the coming months by making a donation. We can assure you any resources you send us we will make sure it goes entirely to those in need.

For a little while longer the light is among you.  Walk while you have the light, that darkness may not overtake you.  He who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.  While you have the light, believe in the light, in order that you should become sons of light. (John 12: 35-36)
